Last Friday a group of rural landholders representing Landcare, industry and farming took a bus tour as part of International Rural Women’s Day celebrations.

We visited the shrinking grasslands to the west of our catchment and learnt about the complex management issues faced when protecting small patches of remnant grassland within the urban landscape.

We found some wildflowers on a walk and talk with Debbie Reynolds from Trust for Nature and listened to Rhys Collins share indigenous knowledge on cultural burns. Lunch followed at Werribee Mansion, prepared by the Wyndham Women’s Support Group and we had a wonderful tour of the migrant community market garden and orchard.

It was a fabulous day spent networking and sharing our passion for the environment and locally grown food and fibre here in the Melbourne Foodbowl.

Thanks to Melbourne Water's Landcare Coordinator Barry Kennedy for supporting the event through Waterways of the West.
