The event marked a significant moment of transition. Guests joined in farewelling inaugural Chairperson Professor Chris Chesterfield, whose leadership has been instrumental in shaping the Council’s work, and warmly welcomed Uncle Andrew Gardiner as the newly appointed Chairperson. For the first time, the Birrarung Council will be led by a Victorian Traditional Owner – reflecting the deep and enduring cultural connection and shared responsibility for Birrarung.

Adding to the occasion, the honourable Sonia Kilkenny, Minister for Planning, reflected on her connection with Birrarung, reinforcing the importance of this work for all of us.

In November 2025 the Yarra Collaboration Committee also farewelled its inaugural Chairperson Dr Jane Doolan and welcomed Dr Anthony Boxshall as incoming Chair. Jane’s stewardship of the Yarra Collaboration Committee fostered strong partnerships and strategic alignment across multiple stakeholders, laying the groundwork for integrated decision-making and shared responsibility for Birrarung’s future.

Both Chris and Jane have played pivotal roles in advancing collaborative governance for Birrarung, shaping a model that brings together Traditional Owners, government agencies, and community voices. Their legacy will continue to influence the next chapter, providing a strong foundation for deeper cultural recognition, innovative governance, and collaborative action as we progress the implementation of Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo and deliver tangible outcomes for the health and future of Birrarung.
