Whilst flooding has always been a natural part of life in Melbourne, it can have a big impact. We are now seeing an increase in extreme weather events globally, and we are likely to see an increase in flooding across our communities.

It is not always possible to fix flooding by simply adding new drains and retarding basins. The best approach is to model and plan for where flooding might occur. Our modelling program includes both waterways and stormwater drains and will now factor in climate change forecasts to the year 2100. Seventy modelling projects are anticipated for completion over 2025 and 2026 as part of the roll out of this program.

Once each flood modelling project is completed, we will work closely with state and local government and the Victoria State Emergency Service, to publicly release the new flood information and embed information into practice.
