The tank stores pure oxygen, which will flow to the bottom of the reservoir in a process called hypolimnetic oxygenation. This reduces iron and manganese, improving water quality at the lower depths of the reservoir and reducing the probability of algae blooms.
The tank will be located on Melbourne Water property off Somerton Road, about 120m from an existing Yarra Valley Water tank. It is about 11m high, and will be installed in a vertical position.
Vote for your preferred colour
We acknowledge that some houses directly opposite the site (along Somerton Road and Aitken Boulevard) may be able to see the new tank, depending on their elevation. That’s why we’ve engaged specialist urban designers to recommend a number of colour choices to reduce the visual impact.
We’re now inviting residents to vote for the tank colour that they prefer, by 30 April 2025. Once all votes are counted we’ll share the winning option – so make sure to ‘follow’ this page to stay updated.
Tip: remember to press the ‘Submit’ button at the bottom to make your vote count!
About the project
Greenvale Reservoir was built to supply water to Melbourne’s growing west, and stores water transferred from Silvan Reservoir. Water from Greenvale flows out to service reservoirs in the north-western and western suburbs.
This project involves installing a:
- new tank to store liquid oxygen
- supply line
- diffuser pipe
- electrical supply.
It also includes upgrades to access tracks.
We expect to begin installing the tank in mid to late 2026.
Location
We are installing the new tank on Melbourne Water property, next to existing infrastructure and looking towards the dam wall.
