De-silting

We routinely de-silt the District's drains to remove the sediment that naturally builds up over time, and optimise their drainage function.

We've recently completed de-silting along a number of drains as part of our ongoing works program, including:

  • Thirteen Mile drain (1.3km and 1.1km lengths)
  • Tooradin Inlet drain (1km)
  • Muddy Gates Drain (1km)
  • Thirteen Mile drain (1.1km)
  • Deep Creek Catch Drain (4.8km)
  • Lower Deep Creek
  • Toys Drain.

De-silting works still in progress include:

  • Martin Drain
  • 14 Mile Drain
  • Enticotts Drain (1km)
  • Soldiers Drain
  • 15 Mile Road Drain (2km)
  • the Western Outfall Drain.

Our staff are also completing inspections to plan further works where they're needed.

Winter channel mowing

Over the next three months, our crew will be busy mowing channels across more than 100 jobs. This helps with the efficient flow of water, weed removal and ensure access to maintain drains.

Yallock outfall planting

Our Koo Wee Rup crew and contractors will be planting an ambitious 90,000 plants over the next three months along the Yallock outfall, between Cora Lynn at Main Drain and Number Five Drain Road. The plantings help suppress weeds and will maintain, enhance and restore valuable habitat for wildlife in the District.

Whilst these works are not funded by the precept rate - the charge that those in the Koo Wee Rup-Longwarry Flood Protection District pay - the Yallock Creek is a Healthy Waterways Strategy priority area, and we therefore deliver these works as part of this program.

The photos below show the progress already being made by our Peninsula and Westernport Natural Resource Management team, who planted a monumental 15,000 seedlings along the South East Catch Drain/Yallock 4 Creek.
