The Victorian Government has committed $12.4 million to open Tarago Reservoir for on-water recreation, specifically to fishing from non-powered motorised boats. This initiative is part of a $73 million package from the Better Boating Fund that will deliver on Government commitments for ‘More piers, jetties and opportunities for little anglers’.
Melbourne Water, together with project partners, are taking steps to deliver on this government priority.
Upgrade to water treatment plants
Part of the government’s investment is for Melbourne Water and Gippsland Water to install new and additional ultraviolet (UV) upgrades to the existing water treatment plants attached to Tarago Reservoir to maintain water quality associated with contact with water.
Maintaining safe, clean and world-class drinking water supply from Tarago Reservoir remains Melbourne Water’s number one priority. As such, swimming will not be permitted.
New boat ramp
Better Boating Victoria (BBV) are managing location and design of the boat ramp and associated infrastructure. Following an independent Multi Criteria Analysis, the end of North Jindivick Road was endorsed by BBV as the preferred location.
The new boat ramp will be constructed by Melbourne Water on behalf of BBV. Land based facilities will be constructed to support the use of the boat ramp, including parking spaces, signage, toilet facilities and security.
Recreational Area Management Plan
To support the opening of Tarago Reservoir for on-water recreation and the new boat ramp, Melbourne Water is developing a Recreational Area Management Plan. The Plan will identify how the boat ramp, boating and fishing activity at the reservoir will be managed. This includes the rules required to protect drinking water quality, whilst enabling limited recreational activity.
What's next?
BBV is currently in the process of developing designs for on-water and land based infrastructure for the development of the boat ramp.
Melbourne
Water is developing a Recreational Area Management Plan. This will document
practices and restrictions for use of the boat ramp and how on-water and land based
facilities will be managed and permitted uses. Melbourne Water will engage with
the community on the development of the Plan in 2025.
