This $12.4 million initiative is part of a $73 million package from the Better Boating Fund. This will deliver on the Victorian Government’s commitment to ‘More piers, jetties and opportunities for little anglers’.
We’re delivering this government priority with project partners Better Boating Victoria (BBV), the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Gippsland Water and other agencies.
This includes:
Melbourne Water and Gippsland Water received $8 million from the Victorian Government for ultraviolet (UV) upgrades to Tarago Reservoir’s water treatment plants: Tarago, Neerim South and Warragal.
The upgrades maintain drinking water quality standards, while supporting limited on-water recreation. They ensure water is treated to manage risks associated with human contact, providing a higher level of safety and reliability.
Better Boating Victoria (BBV) is leading the design and approval of a new boat ramp at the end of North Jindivick Road.
This includes improving existing facilities and building new infrastructure, including:
- parking spaces
- toilets
- signage
- landscaping
- security infrastructure
- on-water infrastructure to manage water quality.
The new boat ramp will be built by Melbourne Water on behalf of BBV, who are working closely with delivery partners and project consultants, such as engineers, cultural heritage specialists and town planning advisors.
Construction is expected to take place from mid-2026 to late 2026. Final detailed designs and statutory approvals are underway, including Town Planning and the Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP).

The Waterway Rules are specific rules that visitors to Tarago Reservoir must follow whilst on the water, including rules around approved vessel types, restricted areas and travel speeds.
Melbourne Water is the Waterway Manager for Tarago Reservoir under the Marine Safety Act 2010 (Vic). We are responsible for preparing and managing the Waterway Rules.
Melbourne Water is preparing the Recreational Area Management Plan for Tarago Reservoir. This outlines how a recreational area will be managed, including:
- permitted and prohibited activities
- how restrictions are enforced.
The requirements for the plan are established in the Water (Recreational Area) Regulations 2023 Act.
