But sometimes the need for environmental water is greater than the amount available. That’s why we consider where and how water can be used most efficiently to achieve the best environmental outcomes.
We do this through a seasonal watering proposal: a document that informs the Victorian Environmental Water Holder’s annual statewide plan for environmental water releases in the following year (July to June).
Draft watering proposals
Melbourne Water works with the Victorian Environmental Water Holder to manage environmental water releases in four of Melbourne’s waterways: Werribee, Maribyrnong, Yarra and Bunyip-Tarago Rivers.
Under the Water Act 1989, we must develop a seasonal watering proposal each year. This is informed by scientific evidence and regional waterway strategies – as well as information and advice from Traditional Owners, technical experts and local communities.
