The Western Treatment Plant captures biogas naturally produced during sewage treatment. This is converted to renewable energy that powers the plant – one of the reasons why it’s a world leader in environmentally-friendly sewage treatment.

When there is more biogas than the system can use, it’s safely burned off through flaring. This creates a flame that can be seen above the treatment plant.

If you’ve seen flames in the distance around the Western Treatment Plant, please be aware that it’s all part of our normal operations.

The flame is safe and there are strong control measures and risk management processes in place at all times. Local fire authorities are aware and have issued Melbourne Water with permits allowing us to flare during fire danger periods and on days of total fire ban.
