Western Treatment Plant Community Tour Day

As part of the Open House Melbourne program, the Western Treatment Plant (WTP) is hosting tours for the community on Sunday 11 September 2022.

These popular tours are a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of this fascinating site. Learn about how the WTP sustainably treats over half of Melbourne’s sewage turning it into water, nutrients and energy ready for re-use. Discover why It is also a place of historic, environmental and cultural significance.

We expect the tours to fill up quickly so bookings are essential and will open tomorrow Tuesday 23 August at 10am.

What to expect:

One hour coach tour (10am and 1pm)

Ever wondered what happens after you press ‘flush’? Learn how the WTP sustainably treats Melbourne’s sewage. Discover a site that has a rich cultural heritage.

Two hour mini bus tour (9.30am and 12.30pm)

In addition to the one hour tour, you will learn about the WTP area being an internationally recognised haven for birdlife and home to many native animal and plant species.

Spend up to half an hour before you start your tour talking and asking questions of Melbourne Water staff and learning about the heritage of the site and major projects coming up.

Before you book, please note:

  • These tours are not advisable for children under 5 years of age
  • Participants must wear closed toe shoes, long sleeved top and long pants
  • Face masks are required on the buses in line with Victorian Government Coronavirus guidelines. More information: Face masks | Coronavirus Victoria
  • There is no walking required on this tour however there are steps to get onto the bus. If you have any accessibility requirements please let us know and we’ll ensure assistance is available.
  • There are no stops on the bus and no toilets available during the tours.
