Orange-bellied Parrots

The critically-endangered Orange-bellied Parrot has once again been observed at the Western Treatment Plant. To help protect this species, please familiarise yourself with both the Birdwatching access map (PDF, 2.6MB) and the Birdwatching access conditions and hazards document (PDF, 2.1MB). These documents outline the route and conduct birdwatchers must comply with when on site.

To ensure the safety and health of the Orange-bellied Parrot, please:

  • Abide by the prescribed speed limit of 30km/hr or as per designated signage
  • Give the birds space to enact their wild behaviours
  • Do not share any locations of the birds on social media platforms
  • Follow the instructions on all signage, including the ‘road closed’ signs
  • Do not enter areas you are not permitted to, especially those with native vegetation and behind any fenced or gated areas not designated on the birdwatching route
  • Do not provide food to any wildlife on site
  • Do not use any form of ‘call-back’ to attract the interest of birds.

Please report any sightings of Orange-bellied Parrots with the date, time, location, photos and any leg-band details to [email protected]

Livestock grazing

Flocks of sheep have been placed into select areas at the Western Treatment Plant (green zones below) to help reduce weedy vegetation around select lagoon systems.

We are aware that sheep were accidentally let into the Lake Borrie and Little River areas last week. These flocks have been removed from these zones and placed back into the secure areas.

Additional gates (see map below) have been locked within the birdwatching route to contain the sheep in the appropriate zones. Please make sure to securely lock these gates as you pass through the birdwatching route.
