Blue-green algae are often found in recycled water, as well as freshwater lakes, dams and ponds.

In summer months, when environmental conditions are favourable, numbers increase rapidly and result in an algal bloom. The algae become clearly visible throughout the water column, and as a scum on the surface.

Although there are a number of risks associated with blue-green algae toxin, there have fortunately been no reported incidents arising from these toxins at WTP.
