Blue-Green Algae

Please be advised that Blue-Green Algae (BGA) is currently present in multiple sewerage treatment lagoons, conservation ponds and natural wetlands at WTP.

BGA are commonly present in recycled water, as well as freshwater lakes, dams and ponds. In summer months, when environmental conditions are favourable, numbers increase rapidly and result in an algal bloom. Under these conditions, the algae are clearly visible throughout the water column, and as a scum on the surface.

There are several species of BGA, many which produce toxins. Ingestion, inhalation or skin contact with these toxins can be harmful to humans. The good news is that although there are a number of risks associated with BGA toxin, there have been no reported incidents arising from BGA toxins at WTP.

To avoid skin contact with BGA, please ensure you wear long sleeves, pants and closed toe shoes when visiting the WTP.

If contact does occur, please wash the affected area thoroughly with fresh water.

Avalon International Airshow

The Avalon International Airshow is due to take place from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 March. During this period Point Wilson Road and Beach Road will be dedicated to the airshow as entrance routes for vehicle traffic to the Avalon Airport site. Extremely heavy congestion is expected at all entrance gates to the birdwatching area.

We advise birdwatchers to plan site visits around these dates and avoid visiting WTP during this period.
