Fox control - T-Section and Austin Road lagoons

Thank you to our observant bird-watching community for reporting foxes at T-Section and Austin Road lagoons. To protect the native species, including the endangered Australasian Bittern and Brolgas currently in these areas, we will be conducting targeted fox baiting around in these locations which has commenced as of Friday 1 September.

Melbourne Water conducts an annual pest control program for foxes, cats and rabbits across WTP, specifically targeting areas of high conservation value. Please continue to report such sightings as these help us to inform what specific areas we should be focusing on.

Cultural burn - Lake Borrie Grasslands

Please be aware that a planned cultural burn will be conducted at Lake Borrie grassland in September. The exact date will be selected based on weather conditions closer to the day. We don’t anticipate this to impact birdwatchers or force any closures of the bird watching route. If route closures are required, signage will be placed out on the day. Please abide by this signage when visiting.

The burn will be undertaken by the Wadawurrung, traditional owners of the Western Treatment Plant, in partnership with the Country Fire Authority.

'Cultural burning' practices were developed by Aboriginal people over thousands of years to enhance the health of the land and its people. It involves cool burning (or prevention of burning) for the health of particular plants and animals, and may include patch burning to create different fire intervals across the landscape, or be used for fuel and hazard reduction.
