29 September 2022

Earlier this month we announced that additional section of the birdwatching route along Lake Borrie had to be closed due to coastal erosion. Recent bad weather had made the condition worse to the point where is was no longer safe to drive along without further work.

This closure was in addition to sections closed to keep the Orange-bellied parrots (OBPs) safe which is providing great benefits to the OBPs that we all value so much.I

Important work needs to be undertaken to repair the erosion damage, so from today (Thursday 29 September) additional gate and road closures will be in place.

Closure dates

To allow for equipment and vehicles to access the affected area while it is repaired, the following gate and road closures will be in place from Thursday 29 September, for approximately four weeks.

Gates closed

  • Gate 4 and Gate 5. This will close access to Lake Borrie and Gate 8 Special Access areas.
  • There will also be no access to Paradise Road toilets.

Gates remaining open

  • Gates 1-3. This will allow access to T-Section, Western Lagoons and Austin Rd bird hide.

Your safety is our priority and during the closure period, there will be increased heavy vehicle traffic on the other roads in the birdwatching area. We remind you to drive carefully and to avoid stopping on Point Wilson Rd, 29 Mile Rd, and Beach Rd.

We appreciate your patience as we undertake this work and acknowledge the impact given there are birdwatching areas already closed. Once these works are completed, we aim to reopen the foreshore entirely, including access to the Lake Borrie Outlet and Little River Bird Hide.

We will send another news update if there are any changes to these closures, and to inform you once the sections re-open. If you have any questions please contact us.

Thank you for your understanding.
