Avian botulism is a naturally-occurring bacteria that affects birds, typically causing paralysis.

We are monitoring the situation in partnership with the University of Melbourne. For your safety, please do not handle sick or deceased wildlife.

Symptoms of avian botulism

Birds affected by botulism show unusual behaviour.

This may include:

  • water birds being unable to hold their head up (resulting in drowning)
  • birds being unable to fly
  • birds dragging their wings, showing poor posture while standing.
