Tunnel excavation works continue
Work on the MRM to North Western Sewer Connection Project is progressing well. Excavation of the tunnel entry shaft is continuing at the MRM-NWS Connection Project site on Williamson Road, with the tunnel is almost halfway to its 40 metre depth. Once the shaft is complete tunnel boring will begin.

River trail closure delayed
We had expected to close the Maribyrnong River Trail by now, but the closure has been delayed while we wait for final project approvals. The trail will be closed from Canning Reserve to the existing Melbourne Water M102 water pipe bridge. The team has been busy preparing for bridge works and the trail closure is important to allow our heavy machinery access to the river while the bridge is constructed.
We’ll let you know when the trail is due to close. We’ll be increasing signage along the river trail in the lead up and preparations will include relocating services around the trail entrance at the Canning Reserve rotunda as well as setting up fencing.
The map below shows the closure and detours. For more detailed information read the community bulletin we sent to residents in May (PDF). If you have any questions, you can ask a member of the project team.

The solid blue line on the map shows the detour that will be in place when the Maribyrnong River trail is temporarily closed.
New bridge design
As part of the project, we are building a new bridge which will carry the new sewer pipe across the Maribyrnong River. The new bridge offers an exciting opportunity to include an improved river crossing for Maribyrnong River Trail users. The design is almost complete and the artist impression below provides a sneak peak at at how we expect the bridge will look.

The existing pipe bridge can be seen in the foreground and artist impression of the new bridge above and further up the river.
