Reviewing submissions and site visits

Over the consultation period we received 61 submissions for Merri-bek and 539 submissions across the four council areas where draft maps were released (Darebin, Glen Eira, Merri-bek and Yarra).

Our assessment team is reviewing all submissions and have started undertaking site visits where needed – meeting with community members to validate the draft maps and ensure they reflect the most accurate local information.

What’s next

The updated flood maps follow a multi‑stage process that includes technical modelling, community consultation, peer review, refinement and formal release.

We recently completed Stage 3 (consult on updated draft flood maps), and are now progressing through Stage 4 (review submissions, validate and finalise maps).

Once all submissions have been reviewed and validated, we will share an update on the key changes and insights from consultation.

The finalised maps will be published online, ready to use in decision making and updating flood emergency management plans and local flood guides.

We will also request authorisation for a Planning Scheme Amendment.

Final maps are expected to be completed in mid-2026.

How often will flood maps be reviewed or updated

We will review flood models every 5 years and update them every 10 years. Any major flood or significant changes in the catchment will also trigger a review.

Updating flood maps helps to better understand flood risks now and in the future, taking into account climate change and changes in the city’s landscape. They don’t create flood risk – they help us to better understand the emerging flood risks that Melbourne now faces.
